Underworld
Script written by Chris Bray

We find Richard McIver alone on a drought-stricken property deep in the Australian Outback. An only child, he's been married but his wife upped and "left with the rain". His dog (Smoky) rests with his head beside his motorbike in the shade of a tree. Emaciated cattle drink from a water trough nearby.

A shot bangs out. The bullet knocks the mug of tea from Richard's hand. The second bullet kills his dog. As Richard faces his attacker he hears further gunshots in the distance. He kills the gunman and, fearing the worst, races on his motorbike back to the homestead only to find his parents have been murdered. Why?

To find out, Richard "follows the money" to the city. When questioned the bank manager tells Richard his father refinanced the mortgage through a lawyer. When Richard questions the lawyer he confirms this but refuses to name his client. Emotionally upset, angry and frustrated Richard trashes the lawyer's office in an attempt to reveal the name of his client. The lawyer's clerk calls the police. When they arrive Richard, still in an uncontrollable rage resists arrest. It takes four policemen to control him.

On remand, awaiting trial, there is another attempt on his life. Having no money to pay the fine, the Magistrate sentences him to a prison term. There's no way he's going to prison. There's no way he's going to give up his quest to find his parent's killer. And there's no way he's letting everything his family has fought for over the years get into the hands of anyone else. Especially when Richard discovers that whoever it is who killed his parents is after the extensive mineral deposits on the McIver land.

So, in one dramatic move, he escapes from court, and becomes a fugitive. The lawyer hasn't released Richard's parents were murdered. When Richard tells him, and he understands what's at stake, he gives him an address. The address is the first step on a dangerous journey into the Underworld, a journey that leads Richard to ex-wife, to a gang of street kids, to drug dealers and finally to the person responsible for his parents murder.

Richard has nothing to lose and everything to fight for.

It's time to go to war.
