SHADOW OF THE OSPREY
Script written by Jack Douglas
The four-part one-hour miniseries, SHADOW OF THE OSPREY, is set in the colonies of New South Wales and Queensland in the late 19th century, and is based on the best-selling novel by Australian author Peter Watt.
It transports the viewer from the opulence and influence of Sydney's aristocracy and the backstreets of the city; to the harsh and heat-baked country of northern Queensland and the hazardous waters of the Coral Sea.
It's the story of two families: the proud Irish Catholic Duffy's pitted against the aristocratic Protestant Macintoshes. Wealthy squatter Donald Macintosh sets cataclysmic events in motion when he orders the violent dispersal of Aboriginals from his property Glen View. The barbaric exercise is led by sadistic Lieutenant Morrison Mort of the Native Police and is witnessed by bullock teamsters Patrick Duffy and his son Tom.
Meanwhile, in Sydney Michael Duffy and Fiona Macintosh have become attracted to each other, unaware of the events taking place that will forever change their lives and those of their families.
The Duffy's and the Macintoshes become bound by blood when Fiona gives birth to an illegitimate child, Patrick, son of Michael. Immediately after the birth and unknown to Michael Duffy, Fiona's mother, Lady Macintosh arranges for the baby to be taken away. Lady Macintosh intends to protect the Macintosh name and its empire at any cost.
Michael Duffy is forced into exile by a trumped up charge of murder brought against him by Granville White who sees him as a rival for Fiona.
Twelve years later and with a new identity and name, Michael returns to Australia to take revenge on Granville White. During his absence, White has married Fiona Macintosh.
The dramatic events of SHADOW OF THE OSPREY inextricably link the Duffy's and the Macintoshes with love, greed, death and revenge as both families fight to tame the wild frontier of Australia's north.
