JERUSALEM OF HEAVEN AND EARTH    —    7 x 30 minutes
Jerusalem (37K)

Many centuries ago - long before most of the world's countries even had a name - a great leader took over a small settlement on a rocky hill and made it the capital of his people. The leader was David, champion and King of the recently united twelve tribes of Israel. The capital was Jerusalem - a name that has resounded down the ages. Its conquerors reads is a roll call of history: Babylonians, Persians, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Arabians, Crusaders, Turks Britons and Jews.

In more than 3000 years of turbulent history Jews, Christians and Muslims have all ruled what each sees as the Holy City. Sometimes they have loved it too passionately. Jerusalem has changed hands more often and more violently than any place on earth. Today it's the capital of the State of Israel.

This series tells the story of Jerusalem, the city of Heaven and Earth.

Episode 1 - The Centre of the World
When men believed the Sun revolved around a flat earth, Jerusalem was the very centre of the world. For centuries pilgrims have flocked to the Holy City.
This episode looks at the pilgrim trade, both past and present; at the pilgrims themselves; at their guides and at the elaborate infrastructure of commerce that caters for their needs.

Episode 2 - City of David
Jews from around the world throng the concourse in front of the famous Western Wall, as they have always done when times permitted, to pray at the remaining vestige of their ancient Temple. Nearby the Jewish Quarter of the Old City rises refurbished from the ruins of the past.
Between the Israeli War of Independence in 1948 and the Six Day War in 1967 no Jew was allowed to enter the Holy City. City of David looks at the battle that reunited the city and the revival of religious learning that followed.

Episode 3 - City of Islam
For most of the past 13 centuries Jerusalem has been a Muslim city. Much of the building of the Old City is the work of many Muslim dynasties that ruled Jerusalem.
In this episode we look at the Arab heritage; at worship in the historic Al Asqa Mosque; at life at home and in the bazaars.

Episode 4 - City of 100 Gates
A century ago some Orthodox Jews established a settlement outside the Old City Walls that has become the most famous enclave in the city. Mea Shearim (City of 100 Gates) is a highly successful attempt to hold back modern customs and ideas.
In the City of 100 Gates we explore family life in this singular community and the deep sense of religious purpose that pervades everything about it.

Episode 5 - The Christian City
Three centuries after the death of Christ the Roman Empire adopted Christianity and Jerusalem was quickly transformed from an obscure garrison town into the holiest city on earth.
This program looks at some of the many facets of Christian Jerusalem and at some of the people who preserve the faith within the city.

Episode 6 - Capital of Israel
With the declaration of the Jewish State in 1948, there could be no other choice for its capital than Jerusalem.
In Capital of Israel we trace the events that made the ancient city capital of a new nation: the British Mandate, genocide in Europe, and the War of Independence.

Episode 7 - Beyond the Walls
Jerusalem is a political, administrative and cultural capital. It has practically no industry and no means of supporting itself. Surrounding the city are the areas that give it life and the areas that are forever bound to it by the epic events of the past.
Beyond the Walls takes us to Bethlehem where Jesus was born; to Bethauara at the entrance of the River Jordan where he was baptised by John the Baptist. We visit Jericho, the oldest city in the world and Massada, the scene of the spectacular last stand of the Jews against the Roman legions after the sacking of Jerusalem in 70 AD.
