THE INTRUDERS — Part 1    —    6 x 30 minutes

The theme of this series is a universal one: introduced species and how they behave when they run wild, their affect upon man and the ecology.

Early voyagers to the shores of Australia sailed in veritable Noah's Arks. Their ships carried much-needed domestic livestock that they often left on coastal islands around the continent to provide food for unfortunate castaways. Once European settlers stepped ashore on the east coast of Australia with their domestic livestock such as Rabbits, Goats, Camels and Donkeys it began what was to become a devastating impact on native species that has lasted to this day.

Episode 1 - Where the Buffalo roam
Bubalus Bubalis, the wild water buffalo, that can weigh up to a tonne, can charge at 40 kilometres per hour, roams the sub-coastal plains of Australia’s North.
The water buffalo has become thoroughly acclimatised since first introduced to the country in 1824. Its destructive habits have upset the natural balance of the Northern Territory’s wonderland, turning once rich billabongs, lagoons and swamplands into a sea of mud.

Episode 2 - Run Rabbit Run
Of all introduced animals, the rabbit has proved to be the greatest menace, as this episode shows. Before control methods were used in the 1950s, the rabbit moved like a grey tidal wave over most of Australia and came close to wrecking the entire pastoral industry.

Episode 3 - Servant of Man
Since its arrival of the First Fleet wild horses are found in all states of Australia except Tasmania. No one knows for certain how big is the wild horse population of Australia. Estimates are impossible to make because they have retreated as far from human contact as possible.

Episode 4 - Gone to the Goats
For miners and Outback early settlers, the goat was the only source of recognisable meat and milk. When better times cam the goats were allowed to wander off to thrive in a climate remarkably similar to the Mediterranean where they originated. Introduced in 1862, the feral goat has firmly established itself on much of the continent.

Episode 5 - Beast of Burden
Brought to Australia because of its toughness, endurance and ability to work in hot, dry climates with little water or feed, the donkey was a natural to run wild in the semi-desert inland. Those that roam the country today are descendants of teams ousted by motor transport.

Episode 6 - Ships of the Outback
In this program we look at the one-hump Arabian camels. Thousands roam dry inland Australia, the largest population of wild camels anywhere in the world. A few are captured for export to, of all places, the Middle East.
